This place is cashing one night before allowing customers to the room and refuses to return the money or cancel the charge in case the customer does not take the room.
There are a few additional reasons for not staying there: small bed, lilliputian sink, supershallow closet, no table nor writing space, noisy floor, negative appreciation on cleanliness, etc.
Go instead to the Holiday Inn Express (three blocks down towards the river). Slightly more expensive, but incomparably better with decent facilities. Be aware however of potential noise from nearby pubs during weekends.
Note that the Merchand Lodge never denied they used the night (therefore cashing it twice) and that the contacted local Scottish Board of Tourism was dramatically helpless.
